Lipton Ice Tea scripts a heartwarming 'Why not' match

Watch the six-minute short film conceptualised by DDB Dubai here

Lipton India has rolled out a digital film for its Ice Tea. Conceptualised by DDB Dubai, the six-minute film 'Chai Shy' tells the story of a mother trying to get her son hitched to her friend's daughter.

It opens with the young man (Sid) working at his desk, in a scene reminiscent of Bollywood hit Dil chahta hai. His mother walks in and asks him if he'll be joining her for 'her get-together' with her friends. He shows no interest. She wants him to meet a girl called Swati, who according to her would be his perfect match. He isn't interested, he reveals, in going to a place where a girl will be seated alongside her parents on one sofa, and he'd be sitting across with his mother and the girl's mom will ask her daughter to get tea for him -- a typical boy-girl introduction with arranged matches.

The mother leaves and he continues to work till late. She sends him a picture of herself with Swati, to show him what he's missing.

The next morning, she brings up the subject again over breakfast. His response this time is that he's just started earning enough and he'd want to wait a while. Her persuasion doesn't seem to help until this point.

In his office, Sid looks at the picture his mother sent on his phone, smiling. Once home, on the dinner table his mother brings up the topic again and asks him to meet Swati over the next weekend. She asks him if he saw the selfie. The boy tries to show no interest and takes his plate and leaves the table. Back in his room, he looks at the selfie again, but chooses to ignore it as he reads some inspirational quotes on his wall.

The scene moves to the weekend. The mother asks her son whether he's joining her. He reiterates that he has no interest. Next, Siddharth's phone rings. It's Swati, who says that she's on her way to pick up his mother's phone from home as she left it there. She tells him that she'll be there in five minutes. The soundtrack comes in, and the boy is shown recounting conversations with his mother and other times when he thought about Swati. He decides to let go.

Swati and Siddharth walk into to the get-together. His mom looks surprised, but happy. Siddharth tells us her he's there to give her the phone. Swati's mother then greets him and asks her to offer him tea. Swati responds by asking him, but instead of the traditional way, she offers him some ice tea. The film ends with the duo shown enjoying a bottle of Lipton Ice Tea. A super says, 'Why ask why, when you can say why not?'

The film went live on social media channels on 19 May 2015.
