Shekhar Suman launches new-age acting academy

The film academy positions itself as a mentorship-led creative platform aligned with evolving storytelling formats and industry demands.

Shekhar Suman has launched Shekhar Suman Film Academy (SSFA), marking his entry into the education and mentorship space with a programme designed for contemporary actors and storytellers. The initiative reflects a growing trend of industry-led training platforms that blend craft with real-world exposure.

SSFA is positioned as a modern, immersive learning environment that moves beyond traditional acting pedagogy. The academy introduces a three-month intensive acting programme, personally designed and largely conducted by Suman, focusing on building practical and performance-ready skills aligned with current industry requirements. The curriculum includes voice and speech training, emotional access, body awareness, camera readiness, and character development, alongside exposure to the Linklater Voice Method and on-set practices.

SSFA leverages Suman’s legacy across cinema, television, theatre, and OTT to establish credibility, while also presenting itself as a forward-looking platform tailored to evolving storytelling formats. The inclusion of masterclasses by actors, casting directors, and filmmakers adds a collaborative dimension, positioning the academy as a bridge between training and industry integration.

Speaking on the launch, Suman said, "For me, this academy is not just an institution. It is a very personal way of giving back to the craft that has given me everything. Over the years, acting has taught me discipline, imagination, resilience, and the importance of truth in performance. And with SSFA (Shekhar Suman Film Academy), where I have personally designed and curated the acting course, and overseen every detail beyond it, I hope to pass that learning forward to the next generation of actors. Through this academy, I hope to create something that goes beyond training and becomes a true creative journey for every student who walks in."

The programme culminates in the creation of a student film, offering participants hands-on experience and a tangible output that can support their entry into the industry. This experiential approach aligns with current demand for portfolio-driven learning and practical exposure.

SSFA is backed by a founding team that includes Dharmesh Sangani as founder and visionary, with GBM Studios supporting the initiative’s scale and infrastructure. Adhyayan Suman joins as founder and director, bringing a contemporary creative perspective, while Ekant Babani, partner and coo, will oversee operational strategy. This leadership structure reflects an integrated approach combining creative direction with business and operational planning.

The academy is open to applicants without prior formal training, with a self-audition process designed to identify potential rather than credentials. This accessibility is positioned as a key differentiator, enabling wider participation while maintaining a curated intake.

The launch underscores the increasing role of personal branding in education-led ventures. By anchoring the academy in Suman’s experience and narrative, SSFA builds an emotional and aspirational connect with prospective students, while also addressing a market need for contemporary, industry-aligned training.

With plans to expand into additional disciplines such as screenwriting, direction, cinematography, music production, and post-production, SSFA is envisioned as a broader creative ecosystem. The initiative reflects how entertainment professionals are extending their brand equity into education, creating platforms that combine mentorship, storytelling, and career pathways for emerging talent.
