First set of BARC TV viewership data reveals few surprises

Star Plus leads among Hindi GECs (all day), Colors is number one in prime time

First set of BARC TV viewership data reveals few surprises
Joint industry body for TV audience measurement Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) has released its first set of findings. These are for the week from 18 to 24 April 2015.

A new set of data will be released every Wednesday and will reflect the viewership ratings for the previous week (ending Friday). BARC currently covers cities and towns with population of over 1,00,000 by monitoring 12,000 households, which is expected to go up to 22,000 with the addition of towns with population less than 1,00,000 and villages.

According to the findings, Star Plus stays in the lead in the Hindi GEC category (as it did according to TAM data for the week ending 18 April). But in BARC’s data for the week, it is followed by Colors, Life Ok, Zee TV and Sab TV, in that order, for the all day viewership numbers. During prime time (7 to 11.30 pm),  Colors was viewed in most households, followed by Star Plus with Zee TV in third spot, according to BARC’s findings.

Among English news channels, Times Now remains at the top spot followed by CNN IBN and with NDTV 24x7 at third place.

Aaj Tak remains the leader in the Hindi news channels category, followed by ABP News with Zee News occupying the third slot.

Among findings shared by Barc with the media, Nick (kids), Discovery (infotainment), Sony Max (sports), Star Jalsha (Bengali GEC), Sun TV (Tamil GEC) and Zee Cinema (Hindi Movies) had the most viewership (by household) in their respective genres.

The findings place Zee Telugu and Zee Marathi as market leaders among Telugu and Marathi GECs respectively, while in the Kannada GEC genre, the findings indicate that Colors Kannada (ETV Kannada) is the market leader.
