She joins Milestone Brandcom from Reliance ADA
If we sit and do the sums, the total amount spent on measured advertising in our country is woefully small. For a $ 1.22 trillion economy, our ad expenditure is about US $7 billion. (BSE market cap is about $500 billion).More than 400 hundred agencies are said to operate in this area. Small, competitive and mostly helpless to carve out new spaces. They spend time fighting each other to grow. Or sucking up to potential clients. Hence growth is governed by zero sum processes rather than brand building innovation.
The august persona who held the first copy was at the receiving end of a barb from a certain do. I remember his visit to India; just prior to his introduction to the Ad Club members, he was behind the curtain, rubbing his shoes on his trouser legs and muttering how tough it was going to be to face these intelligent Indian advertising folk.So let me provoke a bit more. I can take an even bet, with a few exceptions, none of the readers of this august magazine will be able to place the people written about. Maybe we have no sense of our own history. Maybe we don’t care.
The enquiry has its roots in the observation that sales and service in our country’s retail initiatives is fragile. To wit:1. Most Counter sales people in malls are ‘up sellers’. They do not ‘listen’ to your needs; or they blandly say ‘not available’.2. Reaching a 1-800 number with a problem is a problem.
Why shouldn’t client kill ads you presented? There is no greater joy to a client than when a customer responds to his ads — and buys the product. So simple, yet conventional wisdom has it that sales are dependent on quality, price, distribution and need for the product in the customer’s life. Advertising comes in after all these are in the correct order; neatly excluding the impact of the ads, or lack of it.
