UDIT launches creator-led education positioning in India

The newly established university builds its brand around practice-led learning, integrating design, technology and management to position itself as a creator-first institution.

University of Design Innovation and Technology (UDIT) has been formally established in Gurugram through an Act of the Haryana State Legislature, marking a strategic evolution in how higher education is positioned and communicated to aspiring creators. Built on the foundation of Indian Institute of Art and Design, the university leverages a decade-long legacy to introduce a unified, practice-led academic model centred on ‘learning by making’.

From a branding and positioning perspective, UDIT is conceived as a ‘university for creators’, bringing together design, technology and management into a single narrative. This integrated approach moves away from siloed education streams and instead presents a cohesive value proposition aligned with evolving industry expectations. The institution’s messaging consistently reinforces real-world application, interdisciplinary thinking and outcome-driven learning as key differentiators.

The university builds on IIAD’s studio-based pedagogy, which has historically focused on craft, experimentation and industry engagement. This foundation informs UDIT’s communication strategy, where the studio is positioned as the core of the learning experience and a symbol of hands-on, iterative creation. By embedding this philosophy into its identity, UDIT seeks to appeal to a new generation of students looking for practical, portfolio-driven education.

Jitin Chadha, pro-chancellor, UDIT, said, "We are not simply growing an institution, we are reimagining what a creator’s education can look like. UDIT is built on the belief that the most consequential people of this century will be those who can move between disciplines, make things with both hands and mind and lead with purpose. We want our graduates to leave with a body of work, and the disposition to keep making things that matter."

Academically, UDIT is structured across three schools, each contributing to the broader interdisciplinary narrative. The School of Design includes departments such as Fashion, Visual Communication, and Product & Interior Design. The School of Management offers programmes in Fashion & Luxury Business Management and Technology Business Management. The School of Technology provides B.Tech and M.Tech programmes in Computer Science, AI and Design. This structure is designed to support a unified learning journey where multiple disciplines intersect.

Professor Usha Nehru Patel, pro-vice chancellor, UDIT, added, "The studio is the core at UDIT. It is where learning happens, where critique sharpens ideas, and where students discover what they are truly capable of making. Our curriculum is organised around real challenges. Students encounter problems first, then build the skills to solve them. That is the difference between an education that prepares you for existing jobs and an education that prepares you to create what comes next."

The university’s curriculum is positioned as responsive and adaptive, integrating studio-based practice, project-led modules and collaborative work. This approach is supported by infrastructure such as labs and studios, reinforcing the institution’s emphasis on applied learning. From a marketing standpoint, this enables UDIT to communicate tangible outcomes, including portfolios, prototypes and real-world problem-solving capabilities.

Looking ahead, UDIT plans to expand its academic pathways while strengthening research and partnerships with industry and international institutions. This forward-looking narrative aligns with its broader positioning as an institution shaping the future of higher education in India.

Overall, UDIT’s launch reflects a strategic shift in education marketing, where institutions are increasingly framing themselves around purpose, outcomes and industry relevance. By anchoring its identity in creation, interdisciplinarity and practical learning, UDIT establishes a distinct positioning within India’s competitive higher education landscape.
