The Economist Group has announced a new structure in its Asia operations with effect from December 1st, 2008.  A company statement says the changes are a move towards regionalising and merging the businesses of the Group, and are part of the global restructuring of The Economist Group announced in July 2008 by Andrew Rashbass, CEO of The Economist Group on his appointment.
Under the new structure, The Economist Group will merge the commercial functions of The Economist and Economist Intelligence Unit businesses together into four sub-regions each with its own Managing Director, commercial team and P&L, reporting to Tim Pinnegar, managing director, Asia Pacific.
The four sub-regions include China and Taiwan; Hong Kong, Korea and South East Asia and Pacific; India, and Japan. Suprio Guha Thakurta, currently the associate publisher of The Economist, will take over as the managing director of the India sub-region.
Tim Pinnegar said, "The new structure in Asia announced in July, allowed greater autonomy to run our businesses from Asia.  Our customers think of us as one Economist Group not as separate functions and we have taken the opportunity to serve our customers better and quicker, and more effectively use our resources as we move our business from a functional to a regional model."
