Approach Gen Z by mindset, not age

Raised in an era of constant reinvention, this generation has developed a keen instinct for what’s real and what’s performative.

Be it DEI, flexibility, or sustainability, Gen Z notice when intentions don’t align with actions.
Be it DEI, flexibility, or sustainability, Gen Z notice when intentions don’t align with actions.

When one refers to Gen Z in the professional world, the narrative often starts and stops with clichés. But look closer, and you’ll find a generation that’s not just tech-first or outspoken, but one that is deeply conscientious, agile, and value-driven. One that seeks to live life on a fast track.

Raised in an era of constant reinvention, through shifting technology and culture, they’ve developed a keen instinct for what’s real and what’s performative. This isn’t a generation that simply absorbs; they sift, question, and discern – building an internal compass that naturally guides how they create, collaborate, and even lead in the workplace.

From hyper-connected consumers to self-taught creators, they carry a worldview shaped by authenticity. And their expectation is simple: work must mirror the autonomy, flexibility, and meaning that characterises their life beyond the office.

For organisations, this poses both a challenge and an opportunity. This is uncharted territory for both sides of the table, and therein lies its power. Embracing a generation that is unafraid to question norms and redefine convention opens the door to reimagining how work is experienced altogether.

Gen Z’s energy and curiosity offer constant reminders that leading this generation calls for a different approach—one that fosters collaboration, candid dialogue, and mutual growth rather than relying on hierarchy and top-down directives. Here, it is less about ‘what needs to be done’ and more about the ‘why’.

Here are five principles to keep in mind when leading and empowering this new cohort.

Authenticity beats authority

Traditional leadership marks expertise, experience, and hierarchy as the hallmarks of authority. But today, competence, clarity, and character mean much more to this wave of talent. Leaders who listen and act with transparency earn their trust. Build credibility through action rather than rank.

Purpose, not perks

For Gen Z, purpose and pay go hand in hand. They seek roles that make a tangible difference and recognition that’s both timely and genuine. At OMD, those under 30 are encouraged to take centre stage with client pitches; everyday victories are celebrated to fuel motivation and our Extra Punch and Spark awards shine light on exceptional effort and influence. These systems signal our values and help to cultivate an environment that understands its talent.

Lead by listening

Listening is the most underrated leadership skill, yet it’s absolutely vital for this generation that values dialogue over directives. Every conversation is a two-way street, including feedback. Gen Z values leaders who take the time to listen and involve them in decisions. Having informal drop-in chats, organising ‘coffee meets’ with trainees, and proactively addressing misconceptions goes a long way to ensure that all ideas are acknowledged and feedback is genuinely received.

Live your values

Words alone won’t sway Gen Z’s perceptions. Be it DEI, flexibility, or sustainability, they notice when intentions don’t align with actions. Credibility, in their eyes, is earned through consistent and transparent actions rather than hollow promises. Aligned with the same belief in authenticity, OMD India’s hybrid work norms, transparent progress tracking, and other practices put these principles into practice every day.

With 50% women in leadership roles and over 40% of cluster leads being women, we’re setting industry benchmarks in representation. We don’t just mirror cultural diversity — we harness it as a driver of creativity, collaboration, and innovation, ensuring that every employee feels valued and inspired to contribute meaningfully.

Employee wellness is another area where organisations can demonstrate their values. Today, empathy is a workplace essential, not a tokenistic gesture. At OMD, we encourage open conversations around family needs, personal challenges, mental health and caregiving and match that openness with flexible arrangements and wellness initiatives such as OMG Rise.

Bridge the gap

Even as attention turns to Generation Alpha, true value lies in creating a workplace where every generation learns from one another. That’s why our teams are intentionally blended, giving Gen Z opportunities to lead certain initiatives while more experienced colleagues mentor and guide. By focusing on contributions rather than tenure, we’ve built an environment where fresh energy meets seasoned expertise, allowing our culture to evolve naturally while staying rooted in its core values.

Look up, tune in

Of course, this goes both ways. As organisations in India continue to evolve, Gen Z too stands to gain by looking beyond the screen and into the rooms they’re in. The modern workplace is a living network of perspectives, experiences, and quiet wisdom. All it takes is looking up, because even a simple conversation away from your desk can spark an idea or shift a viewpoint better than a five-minute scroll could.

In short, when authenticity, purpose, and empathy become a part of everyday work, it changes not only how Gen Z show up, but how they stay engaged.

As workplaces continue to evolve, one thing is clear: Gen Zs are to be partnered with, not managed.

It’s simple! Give them freedom, hold them accountable, celebrate the wins that matter, and lead with authenticity. Because the only way to move forward with Gen Z is to lead with mindset, not age.
