Advertising doyen Bobby Sista passes away

Sista, whose career spanned decades in advertising and philanthropy, passed away on Saturday 27 July at Breach Candy Hospital following a prolonged illness.

Bobby Sista, a legend of the advertising world known for his extensive contributions and philanthropic efforts, has passed away on Saturday 27 July, at Breach Candy Hospital after a prolonged illness. Born Shambhu Venkatrao Sista, he was a pivotal force in shaping modern advertising in India.

Bobby Sista's journey in the advertising industry began in the early 1950s, inspired by his father, Venkatrao Sista, who founded Sista Sales and Publicity Services in 1934. Under Sista's leadership, the agency evolved into Sista Advertising, later renamed AdArts, which became part of the global advertising giant Saatchi & Saatchi in 1998.

Before joining his father's agency, Sista gained valuable experience with stints at Suhrid-Geigy and Reader's Digest. His father, Venkatrao Sista, passed away in an air crash in 1951, and Sista took over the agency, leading it to new heights and establishing it as a significant player in the industry.

Throughout his career, he remained deeply engaged in the advertising community, often participating in industry discussions in Mumbai and Hyderabad. His contributions to the field were widely recognised, earning him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) in 2015.

Beyond his professional achievements, Sista was a dedicated philanthropist. In March 2002, he founded "Population First" an organisation focused on addressing social issues, empowering women, promoting gender equality, and mobilising communities to improve India's social and demographic landscape. One of the organisation's notable initiatives is the Laadli campaign, which aims to empower girls and promote gender equality.

Sista's legacy in the advertising industry and his commitment to social causes leave an indelible mark. His work and dedication will be remembered and celebrated by many in the industry and beyond. His passing is a significant loss to the advertising community and the many lives he touched through his philanthropic efforts.
