Paper Boat gets sightless Rizwan to tell his tale, transported by smell

Paper Boat has rolled out the latest installment of its 'Drinks and Memories' campaign. This short film of over 3 minutes has been conceptualised by Humour Me.

The film tells the story of an old man, Rizwan.

Narrated by Rizwan himself, the film opens with him gardening. He recounts how his mother told him he was different from other children and he had come from the stars, to be the caretaker of Jannat and that's why he was named Rizwan (keeper of the gate of heaven). His gardening is interrupted by the fragrance of something, which brings him back memories. He recounts how he had a small house by the countryside and how his mother didn't like the city life. Further, he remembers the time when it rained in the village, and how the noise would affect him and the house. At the time, his mother would comfort him by saying that she's named him Rizwan so that he could take care of the children around him – nothing wrong could happen with him, she had said. He remembers his mother's tales and how she would often ask him to save his princess from the monsters. This made him believe that far away in some jungle, there would be an angel waiting for him, he reveals. Fragrance of a certain flower makes him remember one stormy, dark evening, when he heard the cries of a girl. He put his head out the window and wondered whether he's found his princess. He rushed out in the dark and heard scary sounds. Yet he rushed to the site where the girl was crying and pointed a stick out and authoritatively asked for her to be freed. His mother heard him leave the house and had followed him to the spot. As she got there, Rizwan pointed out to her that he had saved Rani.

The film cuts back to the present, where Rizwan is petting his dog. He says that he hasn't had the fortune to see the world like others because he's blind. But he enjoyed the world through his mother's tales. And even today, the fragrance of the winds on a stormy day makes him remember his mother and her tales, he confesses. A super says, 'The sense of smell can transport you. The sense of taste even more so'. It signs off with Paper Boat's 'Drinks and Memories' tagline.

The film went live on social media on 5 May 2016.
