Adland Rockstars: Anshumani Khanna

This week's adland rockstar is: Anshumani Khanna, associate creative director (copy), Contract Advertising

1) Why did you get into advertising?
I'd initially thought I wanted to be a doctor, so my entire 12th standard was only about sciences. In fact, I even passed all the possible entrance exams required for medicine. Suddenly it dawned upon me that blood makes me squeamish. So I decided I was interested in film production, which is what I graduated in. When I told my mum I wanted to do copywriting, she went, "What?! You're going to copy other people's work and write about it?" After some convincing, I began copywriting and that's how advertising happened!

2) What do you think would be the best job for you, outside advertising?
I think I'd be immersed in Quantum Physics. Physics is something I'm completely in love with and a job related to it would be absolutely awesome!

3) Who is the one person in advertising you'd like to have dinner with?
That would have to be David Abbott, although I think I'll only be talking about the amazing 'Father's Day' ad he created for Chivas Regal. That was awe-inspiring work.

4) One person outside of advertising you'd like to have dinner with?
Barack Obama! In fact, four years later when he runs for president again, his campaign could do with a little tweaking from me.

5) One thing you love about your job?
I love the instant high that you get when you see your work. After you're through, your work may be loved or hated, but it's all very instant. You open the newspaper, and it's there. I don't think there are many jobs where you can experience this feeling!

6) One thing you hate about your job?

The amount of lies you have to tell, to make your product sell. It's all this technical, mind-boggling jargon that you have to create to give your product that extra appeal, is what annoys me.

7) One seemingly bizarre idea that you'd love to execute some day?
I'd love to see mermaids signed on as brand ambassadors for condoms. And remember, you read it here first. If anyone does go ahead with the idea, I'd like the credit.
