Battle of the Brands: Gotomeeting Vs Cisco Webex

A weekly round up of the action in the social media space

Battle of the Brands: Gotomeeting Vs Cisco Webex
Work calls and working from home are two themes that are universal now. But never have people talked more about the platform they use for their calls or webinars. Yes, I’m talking about Zoom, which absolutely exploded after the Covid crisis led us all to work from home. Things were going perfectly well for the company and initially, their stock seemed to be the most lucrative to invest in, but then disaster struck. Zoom’s platform had security loopholes that caused major disruption and issues in their meetings/webinars around the world.

So let’s talk about some of the alternatives people are using while the world waits to see if the new security measures put in place by Zoom are going to do the trick. In the ring today are Gotomeeting and Cisco’s Webex – both platforms are robust and are a viable alternative to Zoom for the moment.

Talkwalker, a social media analytics company, based in Luxembourg, takes a closer look at the buzz, using their platform. Talkwalker Analytics analyses the performance of mentions all over the internet and provides key metrics such as engagement, related themes, demographic data, geographic data and influencer data.

1. Mentions:

Looking at data from the last three months (Gotomeeting in purple and Webex in blue), both brands show a very clear trend. There was a huge increase in mentions for both platforms as soon as the Covid crisis really hit home. We see a big rise in the beginning of March. Also, April has seen a huge peak for Cisco Webex, mainly thanks to Zoom , as this platform is being recommended as an alternative in every post that refers to security concerns about Zoom. Additionally, this is the tool being recommended for use for virtual cases for the moment, in various courts such as Delhi High court.

2. Hashtags:

While we took a look at the absolute number of mentions, let’s dig deeper into the actual content and theme of chatter. GotoMeeting has a large hashtag bubble since it has more hashtags associated with it, though its total number of mentions are lower than Webex. The main themes for Gotomeeting are of course the name of the platform itself, #Covid-19, #Webinars and #business. Webex’s most prominent hashtag is the name of the platform itself, as well as #Cisco. We also see #Zoom making a prominent appearance in this cloud since Webex is being touted as a viable alternative to Zoom.
