IPL media rights 2022: Disney Star retains its TV rights; Viacom18 gets digital

IPL media rights 2022: Disney Star retains its TV rights; Viacom18 gets digital
Disney Star has retained the TV rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL), whereas Viacom18 wins the digital rights. Over five years the TV rights would be valued at Rs 21,275 crores and digital at Rs 18,500 crores. 
 
In comparison, TV rights for the first 10 IPLs were sold at Rs 8,200 crore to Sony Pictures Networks. Star won the bid to broadcast the IPL in 2017 for a period of five years. The deal was valued at Rs 16,348 crore.
 
The broadcast rights will be for the term of 2023 to 2027. The new bid sees the value for each IPL match at Rs 57.5 crore per match for TV and Rs 50 crore per match for digital.
 
The bidding wars for media rights began on 12 June 2022 and continued on 13 June 2022. 
 
The IPL media rights have been split into four categories - TV rights for the Indian subcontinent (category A), digital rights for the Indian subcontinent (category B), special matches (category C), and rest of the world (RoW) rights (category D).
 
The C and D categories are still bidding and will be announced soon. 
 
The broadcasters that were a part of this bid are Viacom18, Disney Star, Sony Pictures Networks India, and Zee Entertainment Enterprises.
