McCann opts out of the Abbys

McCann Erickson will not be taking part in the Abby awards to be held during Goafest this year.
Prasoon Joshi, executive chairman, McCann Erickson India and regional creative director for Asia Pacific, has attributed the reason behind their non-participation at the award show this year to their body of work which he says does not feature, what he terms as award friendly work.
“We will be taking part in Goafest but we will not participate in the award shows this year. The main reason for that is because we don’t think we have a lot of award friendly work this year. I have always maintained that we are there to support all industry functions. But it’s only fair that if you have good work, you should participate and if you don’t, you shouldn’t."
"I would say we have more hard working work in the year that passed. Last year was tough, and we had issues at hand to deal with. Many of our clients did not run fresh work, they stayed with old campaigns. We were clear about what our priorities were last year," he added.
Joshi feels there hasn’t been enough introspection around the controversies that hounded the award shows last year. He added, "I believe the discussion around the Abbys is still pending. Every year there is some controversy that crops up. For example, we still don’t have clarity on whether the tally is bigger or the Grand Prix. The spirit with which I would like to go to the Abbys is yet to be instilled in all of us. There are a lot of things that need to be done around the award show. There are meetings planned on Goafest. I would like to contribute wherever I am asked to help out, with ideas. It is imperative that Goafest becomes the most prestigious function that there is, because that has become the premier advertising function in India. If the west wants to come and understand the industry here, Goafest is the only option that is present. So, it is important that it stands for the right values and that work is celebrated in the right spirit. We need to give the right signals to our youngsters, so they know what we stand for and our definition of great work."
Mr Kabeer, You just
Mr Kabeer,
You just displayed how much respect you have for your own industry by calling it shitty. Why don't you suggest a way of making Goafest as important as One Show or D&AD for the globe instead of just jerking around in the industry. People like you will always make local awards look pathetic. You should go and get a career first and then life.
I think the person who said
I think the person who said about frustrated comments should come across and have a debate first. People will get frustrated because they suffer from someone's idiotic decisions. People who work on junior level are always at the receiving end when it comes to boycotting award shows. They work like dogs through out the year and hope to get at least one local award. It means world to them. And if you think these are shitty awards then why don't you come forward to make them better. By not participating in local awards, you are taking easy way out. It is very easy to say that our award shows are fuck all. But man, come forward to better it. Not participating is not the way to do it. Yes, these comments will sound harsh and mean but only idiotic people like you will get hurt. Think about people who work on junior level. Take a poll on local award from them and then decide. If Prasoon and all of us believe that youngsters are the future of our industry, then why aren't we talking to them instead of ignoring them? Please don't think you are making any big points by using big big words like 'notion' and all. And yes, any award function will be a job changing opportunity because people are not happy with their current jobs. If you want that to stop then understand why people doing that. They are doing that because their agency is not keeping them happy, as simple as that. Just come forward and debate openly about this insted of writing comments and being happy about other people' s decision.
The notion of
The notion of "Award-friendly work" coming from one of the senior most Creative directors exposes the hollow-ness of all award functions. Awards are a code and collectively CDs set that code and pretend to break that. Considering barring TVCs all the other work is probably seen by the industry for the first time during the fest is a big joke. A lot of agencies CEOs /CDs are trying to create an illusion of being creative while being pathetically below-mediocre.This whole thing just distracts rather than forcing the agencies to take a hard look at what is the real value they add. Goafest has become a jobexchange run by self-important ,sanctimonious oldies who are craving for some meaning in their rather unremarkable career devoid of either any real professional achievement or true industry statesmanship in representing the industry on broader cross-industry forums. It cant be about a few folks self-indulgently jerking off and becoming fake and false mini-celebrities in this talent starved industry and jumping agencies immediately after that and demanding double promotions or double salaries .Introspection, anyone?
What prasoon has attempted
What prasoon has attempted to raise as an issue is of high importance for our industry at large.we are in a commercial business and not in the business of art...also I salute him for being able to accept that their this years kit hasn't got any new sharp weapons added to the arsenal
I have a feeling that Balki
I have a feeling that Balki and Prasoon are writing the comments themselves
Guys i do not know why we
Guys i do not know why we give importance to the shity award shows they are confused shows in a small but self congratulatory industry and yes most of you are mean and idiotic on your comments ,comments from a few frustrated people>Go get A life or have a healthy debate.
Balki is not into making
well well well...i can see ego floating around...
y the hell are we comparing prasoon with balki or or piyush. They are the masters or rather gurus of advertising. They have prove the world their mettle. Now is the time for us to try and climb the same ladder which they did.
More then discussing who is in and who is out...i think we shud more concentrate on the changing trends in advertising.
Balki is not into making
Balki is not into making brands ... GRPs make those brands. If Idea is a brand it's not because of those pea brained ads ... It's because they pump in serious GRPs ... That way even docomo is brand building...lol.
I think Prasoon is capable of making great ads but sporadically. Balki's success depends on media budgets...his ads are mostly product propositions. You can't ever accuse them of creativity.
But even Ogilvy also withdraws then Balki should participate. He may win some bronzes in over 10000 GRP category
Can we come across as one
Can we come across as one team from one country firstly? And should we really be always bothered about what 'west' thinks about us? They really never think about us (as India) as to what we think of them. Let's serve our country and our consumers first and then will have discussions about 'West'.
I think Balki is into making
I think Balki is into making brands and Prasoon is into making.....god knows what. IDEA is still today's world and working. Mr. Prasoon, Happydent is gone and over.
This is really stupid. I
This is really stupid. I think one should become hero locally and then nationally and then internationally. These were the exact words of Mr. Piyush Pandey few years back. And Piyush, you are so right. And Prasoon, just think of people who are working under you. Don't give them hell just because you are the boss. It's stupid.
Abbys
well done mcCann. atleast some people have the b* s to say things as they are. plus do hope this year goa fest will make headlines for the right reasons and not shiity controversies.
Balki Number 2 ?
This is very Balkish.
But I still give more credit to Balki.
When Balki said we will not participate in awards he knew fully well they will never win any creative awards. Which Lowe ad would have ever won ? Fair and Lovely? Jago Re? Idea ????????
Prasoon should realise that it may not be good to say words like award friendly work etc. He should live in complete denial like Balki.
But then there is a difference. Prasoon is capable of doing a Happydent which is mainstream and won many awards. Balki could have never done that.
So here's the hierarchy. Piyush would never need to do this. Prasoon will need to do this occasionally. Balki will always need to do this.
Ciao McCann!
Good riddance to bad rubbish!
WE ARE THE LOSERS
A new hit song we are planning. Anyone would know a good lyricist for this?
be a sport
be a sport, prasoon. don't take yourself so seriously.
jiten
New award trend: Now losers
New award trend: Now losers are the ones who make headlines.
What are we demonstrating in Goa Fest
I think Prasoon brings out an interesting topic. We need to use Goa Fest as a tool to demonstrate innovation from India to the world.
We should focus lot more on talking about New media, Social campaigns, Entrepreneurship that world needs to see in India.
Movies more
We really understand that movies have consumed your time more than advertising
